Industry Coverage

Paperboard packaging is a paper-based packaging solution made from either fresh or recycled sources and is used in various end-user industries. The region is home to a strong recycling network and has one of the highest per-capita recycling rates. Consumers in Europe are increasingly becoming environmentally aware, resulting in various large-scale companies replacing virgin & recyclable and one-time-use plastic with other sustainable solutions. Government initiatives to promote sustainable packaging in various large economies will enhance the market size.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the region has experienced a surge in demand owing to shifting consumer buying priorities and the imposition of stringent lockdowns by the governments. During the early phase of the pandemic, a steep disruption in the supply chain of food manufacturers and recycling plants resulted in an acute shortage of raw materials and other essential ingredients. However, the growth rate is expected to stabilize with the resumption of economic activities.

Fresh source segment is expected to hold over 25% share in Europe paperboard packaging market size. The segment is expected to host a sizeable share owing to the low recovery rate & recycling rate. Specialized packaging solutions, such as chemically-modified paperboard, will enhance aesthetics to keep the fresh raw material source sizeable.

Boxboard accounts for over 20% share based on volume. Boxboards are a popular product segment, especially in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Growth in these industries is expected to drive material adoption. The flexibility of the product in applications that require laminating, foiling, or polishing can further enhance growth.

Folding boxboard is a grade of boxboard that is capable of bending without fracturing. FBB is produced using several layers of chemical and mechanical pulps. FBB is a low-density board possessing high stiffness. It can be utilized to pack frozen food, beauty, and pharmaceutical products. SUB is a grade of boxboard manufactured from unbleached chemical pulp. It is predominantly available with two to three pigment coated layers. The unbleached chemical pulp can also be replaced with recycled fibers. Solid unbleached boards are generally used to package detergents, beverage carriers, toys, and others.

Non-durable goods hold over 15% share in the market volume. The segment comprises cleaning, cosmetic products, and other perishable items and is primarily driven by transitioning EU economies. Europe also exhibits a high demand for paperboard packaging for non-durable goods; however, the segment is anticipated to expand at a sluggish rate in the region in the next few years
